Idaho and Scrublands book review

In September’s book club meet the biggest debate was regarding the book Idaho; our general consensus was that the book was well written and had some excellent descriptions of the farm, animals and gave you a sense of the place Idaho.

But at the same time, the book left people confused, with lots of questions unanswered; did she kill her daughter? Why did she stay in the marriage? Many other unanswered questions left the ending very open and confusing. We found it was a complex book which didn’t always have the answers, where readers had to make their own conclusions.

The next book we talked about was Scrublands – set in Australia the book again described the area well and you got a great sense of how hot the place was from the author. Everyone who read this book enjoyed it. It was very atmospheric with detailed stories and characters interwoven in the crime drama. If you like your crime dramas then you should enjoy this.

October’s meeting will be on the 10th October 8pm at a member’s house. The book we are reading is Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. Recently it has been made into a film with Saoirse Ronan. It is a story about a young women from a small Irish town who moves to America and the trails and tribulations of moving post world war 2 to the USA.
