In September's book club meet the biggest debate was regarding the book Idaho; our general consensus was that the book was well written and had some excellent descriptions of the farm, animals and gave you a sense of the place Idaho. But at the same time, the book left people confused, with lots of questions … Continue reading Idaho and Scrublands book review

On the whole we all enjoyed this book, set in the backdrop of the Bolshevik Revolution Count Alexander Rostov was under house arrest in a hotel. The story tells of the Count’s trials, tribulations, friendships and romance through … Continue reading A Gentleman in Moscow and Exit West Book Review

Old Baggage Book Review

May 15, 2019May 21, 2019Leave a comment

This month in the book club we read Old Baggage by Lissa Evans. It's a funny and bittersweet portrait of a woman who has never given up the fight for equality and the young women who are just discovering it. Here's what Carin though of it: I read an extract for Old Baggage online and … Continue reading Old Baggage Book Review

If you are worried about a friend who might be struggling with mental ill-health, here are some meaningful things you can do ❤️ Listen without judgement ❤️ Acknowledge that you have taken their feelings seriously ❤️ Help them to look into support options ❤️ Reassure that person you are their for them ❤️ Remember, it’s ok to not be ok •~ #worldmentalhealthday2018 #mentalhealth #wellbeing #balance #balancedlife #community #friendship #reachingout #togetherwecan #talkingtogether #communication #womenliftingwomen #womensinstitute #beemoor #beemoorproud #Manchester #Northwest

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much #helenkeller I was reminded of this at our June meeting, when the brilliant Beryl and Tracey came to speak about their friendship that was created through Cyril Flint Befrienders (a fantastic charity tackling loneliness). The wonderful 84 yr old Beryl spoke openly about the devastating impact #loneliness had on her life and the difference her friendship with Tracey had made. Beryl may have walked through our doors knowing no one but she left with 50 new friends, as a new member and with many invitations for a cup of tea #powerofcommunity 💥 Young or old we all have the need to connect. To find likeminded people we can laugh with, cry with, drink wine or gin or tea with 🥂🍷☕️ to support us and we them ☺️ Whilst there are many things I wouldn’t want to bring back from the past - I don’t fancy scrubbing my son’s rugby kit by hand and I wouldn’t do very well at the dutiful wife must do exactly as my husband says thing – I do believe in the power of community 💪 It takes a village and it takes the people in that village to look after each other. Look out for those around you 👀 They might seem quiet or like Beryl they might be unable to leave the house and would just be really grateful for a smile, a hello and a how are you 🙌 •~ #community #togetherwecan #womensupportingwomen #knowyourneighbours #people #wellbeing #positivechange #friendship #reachingout #support #tribe #ittakesavillage #salemanchester #manchester #tacklingloneliness #womensinstitute #beemoorproud

Manchester Day 2018. We laughed, waved flags, sang, danced, waved & cheered. Such an amazing atmosphere and an honour to walk with @thepankhurst and other WI’s from across the city in celebration of #vote100 #suffragettes. A brilliant experience and fantastic day •~ #womensinstitute #womensupportingwomen #community #togetherwecan #suffragette #suffragist #beemoorproud #manchester #northwest
